Is A Sugar Addiction Related To Candida?

Hi Kelly,

I just want to say your book How To Cure Candida has been most helpful and I am going to attempt this diet in accordance to your information. I'm 21 and since I was 16 I have constantly been getting thrush/candida on and of along with other health problems like depression, fatigue, ibs, sinusitis, ear infections, etc. It's really got me down because I've never felt right. My diet hasn't been great and I used to drink a lot of lager which obviously is very yeasty. I live in cold England so couldn't think that the enviromental factor in the book you mentioned could be related to that. Any way two questions, say i wanted to go out with friends and have a sneaky alcoholic beverage, is there any I can drink that is low of sugar that won't disrupt my Candida overgrowth? Second is one of the symptoms sugar addition? I love sugar and have attempted before to cut it out and have failed because I have been very moody and upset because of having no sugar. Is this normal?

Thank you for contacting me! You're right, Beer/lager is one of the worst things when you have thursh/candida. As you pointed out, the yeast is what does it. If you want to have drinks with your friends it's going to be difficult until you're healed. And, with your long history of thrush, beer will always be something that bothers you. However, once you've sufficiently healed from Candida, a mixed drink with some sort of liquor (vodka, gin, whiskey, etc) and a mixer that isn't sweet is your best bet. You can mix in diet soda, seltzer water, or grapefruit juice. Those are the safest, though everyone is different and for some people any type of alcohol causes their symptoms to act up.

Having candida will definitely make you addicted to sugar. The candida needs to eat, and since it seems you have an overgrowth it will have you craving sugar since that's candida's favorite "food." I'm talking about sugar in any form, anything sweet, even fruit. When you stop having sugar your body will go into detox mode and the candida will do all it can to make you start eating sugar again. Plus, when you starve the candida and it dies off, you'll feel pretty bad for awhile as the toxins increase in your body. Drink a lot of water to flush it out.

If you follow a candida health plan you should beging to feel better in a couple of weeks. Most people tend to give up before then though and spend years, decades, or their entire lives feeling awful. I hope you stay strong and regain your health. It will be like living a brand new life once you've gotten the thrush under control!

To your health!

Kelly
